Plans are underway by the Ministry of Health to put the services of the medical laboratory science profession under a Public Private Partnership. The Medical Laboratory Professional Workers Union is however raising concerns about the lack of proper engagement with the Union.

The General Secretary of the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers Union, Cephas Kofi Akortor, in an interview with GBC News, said the initiative is likely to make the public pay more for the services of medical laboratories as it will be more expensive.

He indicated that the Ministry and other stakeholders need to engage the union and outline the modalities involved in the partnership to ensure that the work of union members is not threatened.

Mr. Akortor also called for proper regulations, such as the National Health Laboratory Policy, before the Public-Private partnership is implemented.
